The client is an industry leader providing reliable on-time rush delivery service, freight and critical parts storage, as well as seamless distribution and route work services. It started its operations in 1997 as a rush courier company. It has built a distinguished reputation in this type of business and has since expanded its operations to include scheduled services and distribution.
With the advent of smartphones, mobility solutions for logistics had become more than a necessity. The need being apparent and immediate, the client was clear and keen in engaging with a vendor who could assist in rolling out a solution at the earliest to gain early mover advantage in the competitive courier market.
The client required an app that could track the movements all the drivers in the field at regular intervals so that their data center to track their progress and update their status as well as take decisions on assigning new jobs to them. It was necessary to inform the driver immediately of any new job assignments or of any changes in their existing jobs or if new job is assigned.
Rheal proposed to build a location based service application on the Android platform addressing all the high level requirements provided by the client. Besides tracking & gathering real time location data of the courier drivers, the system also allows their data center to communicate job updates with the driver in real time using Push Notifications technology. We also implemented a document scanner that enabled the drivers to scan documents such as receipts etc in real time and upload to the central server. Mapping tools are embedded within the mobile application to assist the dispatch personnel in tracing efficient road routes from the source to destination points, thus bringing down time & cost in delivering the courier parcels to their customers.
Rheal was instrumental in implementation of the first version of the application and is involved actively in the implementation of subsequent phases.
The solution helped the client's data center to form a bird's eye view of the field. This enabled them to align, schedule & prioritize next-in-line jobs directly to the dispatch personnel depending on their relative proximity to the delivery destinations. The above brought forth operational efficiency to their present delivery mechanism by reducing the lag time between jobs which in effect enabled them to expand their input capacities resulting in increased number of deliverables.
